The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Justin W. Tkatchenko, CBE BEM OL, MP, has officially announced the reappointment of Mr. Elias Wohengu as Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs, for a second consecutive term.

The decision, ratified by the National Executive Council (NEC), under Decision No. 27/2026, mandates Mr. Wohengu to lead the Department for another four years, effective 17 May 2026. This decision underscores the Marape-Rosso Government’s steadfast confidence in Mr. Wohengu’s strategic vision and his distinguished service to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

Since taking office in May 2022, Secretary Wohengu has been a cornerstone of the nation’s diplomatic machinery. “Mr. Wohengu’s professional wisdom and extensive experience have been instrumental in our recent diplomatic successes,” stated Minister Tkatchenko. “His reappointment is a clear testament to the Government’s unwavering trust in his leadership. Under his guidance, the Department and our overseas missions have demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic growth.”

The next four years represent a pivotal period for Papua New Guinea’s foreign policy. Minister Tkatchenko emphasized that the continuity of Mr. Wohengu’s stewardship is vital for maintaining the nation’s momentum on the global stage.

I look forward to our continued partnership,” the Minister added. “Together, we shall strive to achieve the best outcomes for our people and ensure that Papua New Guinea remains a proactive and respected voice in international affairs.”
